Memoir Writing as Individuation Process

GUILFORD DUDLEY, Ph.D.

Memoir writing excavates narrative events in one's life of great personal significance to the
writer, potentially unearthing material from the unconscious that is new. These discoveries
can stimulate what Jung calls individuation, leading to a more conscious awareness of how
defining events in one's life illuminate the overall meaning of that life in uniquely individual
terms. Memoir writing can yield far more than emotional catharsis, inviting the writer to
delve more deeply into areas of his psyche that the events bring to light, and to integrate
what he finds into one's total personality. This series is for memoir writers, readers, those
contemplating writing a memoir, and for those interested in Jung's psychology.
