Lecture: Truth and Reconciliation - Journey to
Find the Bones
Catharine Jones, L.C.S.W., M.Div.
We will take a brief look at South Africa's journey these past years as that country continues to struggle with the end of apartheid. I will include reflections upon the remarkable and controversial process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Their process has drawn me to examine the complexities they face in relation to the multiple challenges we need to confront within our own country. I will speak from my own personal experiences in South Africa, including encounters with indigenous folklore and native healing.
Workshop: Wrestling with Proteus
The myth of Proteus is a useful backdrop for discerning the feeling component of cultural complexity, and competence, within relationships. In this workshop we will aim to increase our capacity to talk about our own feelings and experiences of diversity, and our own experience of racism. We will endeavor to enhance this capacity through the use of Jung's Active Imagination and practices of mindfulness, as well as from information from attachment theory and current neuroscience. As we
wrestle with our Protean, shapeshifting avoidances of our own internal racism, we increase our acceptance of others.
